Description

A low circular ceramic dish with a broad bottom, curving up sharply in a cavetto terminating in rounded edge (piece of rim missing). Set on low, sharp, flaring foot. Glazed base. Grey-white porcelain body, glazed over all in yellowish white. Enamelled over the glaze in red and green floral patterns.

History Of Use

Swatow Ware, named after a small port form which the ceramics were once thought to be exported, includes varied porcelain from kilns in the north of Kuangtung. The wares were produced from the 16th through the 17th centuries, approximately, and were intended for export to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Japan.
