Description

Round basket with flared walls. Base and walls are decorated. Base has 2 bands of dark brown with the outer most band extending up the wall to an openwork band, with a third brown band above. Ten diagonal design of red and faded pink stitches are on the 2 brown bands on wall. Two re-shaped handles extend upwards from rim. Reinforced rim appears to be braided.

Basketry filled a vital need as containers for storage domestic use and transportation of goods. Some had multiple uses; others were made for specific functions. After European contact, used for trade and sale items. Forms have been altered to meet European tastes. Basketry making was a women's art.

Specific Techniques

Twined work is 2 ply z-twist plain weave. Diamond shapes created with alternating rows of overlay and false embroidery. Base begins with 8 rows of twining; thereafter weaving alternates with one row of twining and one of simple plaiting. Band of crossed warps secured with 3 rows of z-twist plain twining. Rim finished by sewing warp ends against reinforcing bundle with wrapping.
