Purse Item Number: 1098/3 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Flat, rectangular, envelope-style, embroidered purse with triangular flap located on one short end. One side is detailed with densely worked counted-thread gold metallic embroidery and edged with blue beadwork. The design follows the shape of the purse, with a central panel and borders, worked in flat stitches which form various textures. On the reverse side, there are two rectangular panels that form pockets. The two ends fold together with the opening at the triangular flap. Lined with printed plaid cotton flannelette.

History Of Use

This purse is probably intended to be used as a wallet, i.e., folded in half lengthwise with the large panel of gold embroidery on the outside, and fastened with the triangular flap.

Specific Techniques

This style of embroidery is probably called “zardosi.” Stitching used: counted thread embroidery; buttonhole stitch.

Narrative
