Armband Item Number: Ed1.297 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Pair of arm bands for the lower arm shaped like cylinders tapering to the wrist. Arm bands are made of parallel lengths of bamboo with a circle of rubber inserted through holes in the bamboo lengths at each end, onto which are threaded bamboo cylinders that serve as spacers between the ends of the lengths of bamboo.

History Of Use

Arm bands of this kind were worn in hot weather under the upper garment (chogori) to prevent the wearer’s clothing from sticking to his skin. They served to ventilate the sleeves. As they were simple, they could be worn by all social classes. Such articles were made by masters with this specialization. They were sometimes made of rattan or horsehair (from the horse’s tail). Arm bands like these may have been used in rural areas.

Specific Techniques

Bamboo is straightened after heating it with fire.
