A man's hat with an attached leather and plastic eye shade (5 cm at the widest point). Has a horizontal band (12 cm) of multi-coloured fabric, rickrack, braid, and a 14.5 cm band of bright blue fabric appliqued with red and yellow vertical stripes. Very large red wool pompom on the top crown.

History Of Use

Men's hats differ from women's both in form and pattern, whereas there is less difference between the sexes in other items of Saami costume, such as the tunic or shoes. Men's hats are, generally speaking, larger and more elaborately decorated than women's. There is considerable variation in trimming of all clothing to distinguish one regional group from another.
