Description

Print depicting a figure being transported in a sedan chair by two men with two other figures walking beside the sedan, and a figure on a grey horse behind. Buildings, other structures, trees, mountains and silhouetted figures are depicted in the background in grey, black and blue.

Narrative

The print is called Mishima, asagiri (三島 朝霧; Mishima, morning mist), from the series Tokaido gojūsan tsugi (東海道五十三次; the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaido). The full title Tōkaidō gojūsan-tsugi no uchi (東海道五十三次之内), Mishima (三島) appears in the top middle in black with a red seal, asagiri (morning mist). The print is signed 広重画 (Hiroshige ga). The series was originally published by Takeuchi Magohachi (竹内孫八) of Hoeidō (保永堂) in 1833–1834, and marked with a seal, Hoeidō (保永堂) under the artist’s signature on the bottom left. The series was reprinted by publisher Iwanami Shoten in 1919. This print could be from either edition.
