Description
Spindle with hand spun, light brown cotton. Hemispherical clay whorl, wood spindle that protrudes above the top of clay whorl.
History Of Use
The spindle is rotated to impart twist to the fibre. The spindle is light in weight and cotton fibre is short in staple length. It is possible that this spindle was rotated with its tip resting on the ground or on a gourd or pottery sherd.
Narrative
Bought from Antisuyo, a cooperative that markets crafts from the jungle. It was said to have been made by the Campa people living on the Rio Cenapa in Peru. The Campa live primarily in the eastern foothills of the Peruvian Andes, although a small number live in Brazil.
