Tapa Cloth Item Number: 1402/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Long rectangular tapa with painted designs in brown and black on natural ground. The centre is almost completely covered in a grid-like design with geometric motifs. The end sections have two squares with triangular designs and numbers painted in them - 46 at one end, 47 at the other end.

Specific Techniques

The bast (inner bark) is beaten (using a beater) on a tutua (wooden anvil). Mamanu (freehand painted designs) are then applied.
