Round, square hole in centre, inner and outer rims on both sides, four Chinese characters on obverse, design on reverse, believed to be animals.

History Of Use

A coin-like charm, which could have circulated (Larson, David). An amulet used as part of ritural paraphernalia at the May 5th Festival to keep harmful things away such as: dangerous animals, poisonous bugs, evil spirits, etc. Presumably worn by children (Li, Min).

Iconographic Meaning

On reverse is a representation of devil-busting deity, Zhong Kui, chasing after five harmful creatures: a three-legged toad, a tiger, a spider, a snake, and a centipede.
