Breast Ornament ? Item Number: 1003/28 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Beaded square adornment with a long band attached at both ends to the top of the square. There is a red cord attached to the top edges and looped around the back. There is a smaller black velvet square set between the band ends. The upper sides are edged with yellow trim; the lower sides with red velvet trim. The beadwork has floral motifs in pink, red, yellow, white, clear and blue, vine motifs in black and large leaf motifs in green on a white ground. Attached at bottom are beaded, curly orange tassels. The back is lined with brown cotton.

History Of Use

The piece looks similar to a beaded bag or pouch, but doesn't have an interior opening, so is thought to have been used as an ornamental panel to be worn around the neck?
