Pictorial Charm Item Number: Edz4288 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Round charm, square centre hole, inner and outer rims on both sides, design on obverse; cock on obverse.

History Of Use

A charm, probably for a birth or birthday (Larson, David). There are several possibilities for how this charm was used. It might have been a gaming piece (part of a larger set). It could also have represented the cock, one of the twelve zodiac animals, and used as an ornament, individually or as part of a set. Finally, the cock might represent a protective power against harmful creatures, such as bugs, and therefore it would be worn by children as an amulet.
