Description

A woman's waist-length, close-fitting, long-sleeved black wool jacket with a wide low-cut square neckline. Lavishly trimmed at the neckline with black braid cord and metal beads in a floral design. Centre front opening has hooks and eyes. Sleeves are fitted from the shoulder to the elbow and are trimmed with fine pleating and decorative braid. Sleeves have some fullness at the elbow, but are tapered to the wrist. Button and loop closure at the wrists. Lined with striped cotton herringbone fabric. Fine draw cord at neckline to bring it closer to the body. A 5 cm. strip of a different black fabric added at the bottom to lengthen it. Hooks at bottom front edge attach to skirt 1343/1.

Worn with scarf 1343/4 tucked into the neckline. Braid work around neckline is done by hand by specialists who serve a 3-year apprenticeship. Part of a costume acquired by the donor from a friend.
