Description

White cotton under skirt (or slip) with floral eyelet border at hem. Skirt is pleated onto a top band with wide pleats all facing in one direction. The top band forms wide straps and round armholes. The edges are finished with white cotton trim woven in a small scalloped pattern.

History Of Use

Under-skirts “Sok-chima” in this style are typical of this period, and are more decorated than those used now. They open in the front to allow for the comfort of the woman’s breasts. The pleats are wide to avoid bulk, which was not desired then.

Narrative

According to the donor, she purchased this set of clothing in a market in Seoul in 1970.

Specific Techniques

Machine sewn. The side seams are finished with machine-sewn overcast stitching.
