Basket Item Number: Nbz832 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Rectangular basket with a short foot and two grosgrain ribbon handles. Imbricated floral design in black and white repeated on each side. Stripes of red cherry bark around the foot at varying intervals.

Iconographic Meaning

This type of plant design is relatively uncommon. Other baskets with this design have been attributed to the Cultus Lake area, Chilliwack and Musqueam. The (late) Sto:lo Elder, Rosaleen George, said she had been given a tree design from an aunt at Musqueam. She was related to the Point family.

Narrative

The donor's family lived in Kamloops from 1907-1909, then Duncan from 1909-1920, at which point they moved to Vancouver. She said the family traded old clothes for baskets. The ribbon handles were added by the donor.
