Description

Five halved, spherical gourd shells set round side up and strung together in a row with wire. Each gourd is shallowly carved with different geometric and curvilinear designs, then painted black, orange and yellow-orange.

Narrative

The bowls were previously owned by the donor's father, Reverend Banfield, who was a missionary, mainly in West Africa, from 1901 to c. 1930. He worked for many years among the Nube people in interior Nigeria.
