Description

Earthenware jug in the form of a sitting upright yellow lion (part a). A shield shape coat of arms (with lion on diagonal) is held in front by the front paws. Blue feathers on chest, white neck with blue scrollwork. The detached head of lion forms the lid (part b) of jug.

Iconographic Meaning

Jug in the form of a lion bears the arms of the monastery of canons at Beromunster, Lucerne, in Switzerland. Its form is similar to the sculptural lions that served as supports for tiled stoves.
