Description

Large white pyriform earthenware tankard on flat base with pewter mount, flared neck, flat pewter lid hinged to loop handle. Double blue lines with gadroon edging enclose spiral of 3 large purple flowers, smaller flowers and leaves; flanked by "16 94".

History Of Use

This unusually large tankard, a good example of painterly and technical virtuosity, was probably commissioned as a presentation piece, perhaps for a guild or another organization.
