Description
White earthenware jug (syrup jar) on a flat base with baluster shape body, flat loop handle, tubular spout from shoulder, cylindrical neck and flanged rim. At the base of the handle is a blue cock, below is a cartouche with "Syd Stiadosso". "M.I.B." inscribed underneath cartouche.
History Of Use
The inscription Sy·d·Stiadosso indicates a syrup of distilled white mithridatium or theriac (both referring to an antidote against poison). Originally from the Farmacia del Gallo, a sixteenth-century pharmacy in Faenza, Italy. Below the inscription may be the merchant’s mark.
