Description

Baby carrier consisting of a tubular structure of cotton cord, lozenge shaped netting. The cords are strung with small black and larger red seeds in an alternating pattern.

History Of Use

Worn diagonally across the upper body by women with small children. The child is supported in it against the hip.

Narrative

The collector purchased this from Juan Rodriguez P., proprietor of The Jungle Shop, in Lima on May 27, 1982. It was said to have been made by the Campa people living on the Rio Cenapa in Peru. The Campa live primarily in the eastern foothills of the Peruvian Andes, although a small number live in Brazil.
