Description

Cylindrical, white earthenware jar with indented waist and flaring, flanged lip. Central dark yellow oval medallion enclosing a phoenix over a cup. There is blue scrollwork overall. Inscribed across the cup is "SEMPER EADEM". Inscribed below with medallion is "ILL.D.SVC.ROS."

History Of Use

The inscription Semper Eadam means “always repeat”; the inscription on the lower body, Ell·D’SVC·Ros, indicates this jar was used for storing a compote of wine of round-leafed sundew.

Iconographic Meaning

Central cartouche with a phoenix, a mythical bird who is cyclically consumed by fire and reborn out of the ashes. The phoenix is also associated with the sun and is a symbol of early Christianity.
