Tankard Item Number: Ch128 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Globular white earthenware tankard on flat splayed base, cylindrical neck, loop handle, flat pewter lid hinged to handle. Blue lines circle central band of spiralling blue, yellow, purple flowers and green leaves; flanked by floral sprays. Inscription and 1684 date above.

History Of Use

Tankard painted more cursory and static, with little sense of flow or connection between the floral motifs. The inscription around the neck would indicate a move away from the strictures of the Anabaptist “ordinance.”
