Description

Rectangular shaped coiled cedar root basket with wood slat foundation and two carrying handles. The handles are each attached to one side of the basket through two loops which are formed from raised portions of the basket's overcast rim. The basket is decorated with a zigzag design that alternates between solid lines of red cherry bark and lines of white grass bordered on both sides by black dyed cherry bark. The basket also has a foot of one slat.

History Of Use

A gradual change is seen in Salish basketry traditions from the 1820's to the 1940's with the decline of utilitarian basket making and the increase in decorated baskets, made for sale.
