Description
Black and white striped panel vest. The vest is made of four woven panels, stitched together at the back and top. The sides are connected by two white bands on either side. The front is left open and a wide black band is sewn around the neck and partway down the front. The edges are edged with thin black trim. The inside is unlined.
Specific Techniques
Garment fabric constructed by method known as "saki-ori" technique, a technique of weaving material from cotton or bast fibre warp and strips of used and torn cotton weft. In this garment 18.0 cm wide fabric panels of the vest have been woven from un-dyed cotton warp threads and a weft of dyed and un-dyed cotton rags. Woven on a "jibata" or a back-strap loom. Collar, front-facing, and edging along the garment's sides indigo-dyed woven fabric. Thick padding has been inserted within the back of the collar and extending around the front. Large stitches (chevron pattern) embroidered on the inside of the collar and front facing. Lower edge is hemmed. Garment assembled by hand-stitching throughout.
