Description

Rectangular beadwork sewn onto a cloth backing. Elaborate beadwork in green, black, white, purple, and blue decorates one side of the ornament. On the bottom edge, there is a thick fibre fringe with white beads on the end. A piece of twisted fibre hangs down from the back of the ornament. A green button is attached to the back of the ornament to the side.

History Of Use

Girl’s apron, called lighabi. A leather or canvas loin apron hung with beaded tassels; replaced by larger versions as the young girl grows towards puberty (Powell: ‘Ndebele: a People and their Art’).
