Round charm, round centre hole, inner and outer rims on both sides, eight Chinese characters inside around charm, and design of eight bats and eight dots on obverse; design of tree and figure on reverse.

Probably used for hanging or display (Larson, David). Used as a gift presentation and personal ornament for merchants setting out to travel (Li, Min).

Iconographic Meaning

The inscription is surrounded by eight sycees (currency consisting of stamped lumps of silver) representing wealth. On the reverse, the images include a money tree, the magic treasure basin, and the civil goddess of wealth, Bi Gan or Fan Li (Ma, 1992, 115-117).
