Description
Blue patterned hanten (袢纏, also written as 半天, 袢天, 半纏) with dark blue patchwork. The pattern consists of dark blue dots in horizontal rows. There are dark blue patches on the upper back, shoulders, sleeves and the bottom of the centre opening. There is a small blue square on the left lower front, above the hem. There is a wide dark blue band around the neck and down the centre opening. The short sleeves are tapered. The inside is unlined.
History Of Use
There are different styles of hanten (袢纏) for different uses. It is worn as a winter jacket/coat if padded, or a workman’s jacket by traditional shopkeepers or during a festival. Hanten is a casual wear and worn over ordinary clothes, not over a kimono.
Specific Techniques
Technique used for fabric of main body of garment known as sashiko (刺し子) technique: 2 or 3 layers of dyed indigo-blue fabric covered in small stitches of indigo-dyed cotton over the entire surface.
