Feather Cape Item Number: 1788/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Kiwi feather cape. Brown and albino feathers mounted on a fibre base. The upper edge has a braided edge ending with a fringe. One end has one tie and the other has two ties.

Specific Techniques

The weft is woven from candle wick material; the warp is embroidery thread. The feathers are “brown Kiwi”, a species group of three species indigenous to New Zealand. Identification can only be taken to the genus level: Apteryx sp. The lighter band of feathers are from albino or partial albino kiwis. Though rare, kiwis with adherent plumage are not uncommon.
