Skirt Item Number: Sa440 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Square, cotton skirt made of two panels sewn together horizontally in the middle. The design consists of vertical seam stitched geometrical patterns of chevrons, diamonds and X-s in white, blue, green, purple, yellow, pink and blue on a red, black and orange striped ground. The skirt is in a tube-like shape.

Narrative

This set of textiles from Ixtahuacan (Sa440-448) was commissioned in the community in 2001 and collected in 2002. The women who took responsibility for making the clothing normally weave together as a small cooperative. All except one are widows who weave to support their families. All the weavers are related to Dona Maria Ordonez Ortiz.
