Waxemedlagin xusbandayu' (Even Though I am the Last, I Still Count) Item Number: Nb3.1494 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Two mixed-media, photo-based installation panels. On panel 'a', the outer borders depict four wolves, while the inner photographic image is of the artist's aunts and uncles as children, and the larger image is of old growth forest in Kingcome Inlet. Panel 'b' depicts four ravens on the outer borders, while the inner photographic image is of the artist's mother and her youngest sister, inside the larger image of the water and islands around Gilford Island.

Iconographic Meaning

The painted and photographic images on the piece refer directly to Nicholson's ancestry and family, drawing direct and ongoing connections between the objects and family and community history. The installation was both a critique of the Museum's visible storage and the visible absence of contextual information on the objects in the collections, and a declaration of identity.
