Description

Curved cream and brown horn spoon with small perforation at end of handle. [EC 'DCF 2004-2006 What's Upstairs?' 13/3/2006]

Longer Description

Curved cream and brown horn spoon with small perforation at end of handle. The spoon is made of a single piece of horn, perhaps from a mountain sheep or cow. The grain of the horn can be seen. The handle tapers toward the end and has a slight curve to it both lengthwise and widthwise. The 'front' of the bowl measures 5 mm wide, at its widest the bowl measures 61 mm, where the bowl joins the handle the width is 32 mm and the top of the handle measures 5 mm. The perforation is 23 mm from the tip of the handle and may indicate where a carved handle would normally be attached with a nail. [CAK 06/04/2009]

Research Notes

The following information comes from Haida delegates who worked with the museum's collection in September 2009 as part of the project “Haida Material Culture in British Museums: Generating New Forms of Knowledge”:
This spoon was viewed alongside other horn and wood spoons on Wednesday Sept 9, 2009. No information about this particular spoon was recorded from delegates. However, with regards to other spoons showing perforations in their handles, delegates thought these might have been used to hang spoons on walls. [CAK 19/04/2010]
