Mask Item Number: A3155 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Painted wood mask that has a face carved forward in a slant. Nose and jaw project outward. Cut out circular eyes are surrounded by a plain carved tapering oval and recessed with deep sockets. Has a black face with red cut out nostrils, and a slightly parted red mouth.

History Of Use

Likely a Land Otter or Wildman Nox Nox mask due to the vertical brow ridge.

Narrative

Listed as being from Kyuquot on the collector's list, but this is thought to have been a mistake as it is clearly carved in a northern, most likely Tsimshian, style; the collector spent many years in Tsimshian territory.
