Description

Pair of white cotton socks (part e-f). The sock has a wide ankle, rounded heel and foot angled downward. There are two layers of fine white cotton fabric with synthetic batting between the layers, sewn together with a single seam. Outer sock has selvedge at top edge; inner sock has unfinished edge.

History Of Use

Such socks were worn at that time with formal wear for warmth in winter. The unfinished top edge is typical of the time. Women’s socks were more curved in outline than men’s.

Specific Techniques

Seams are machine-sewn. Outer and inner layer are sewn together with a single seam, with raw edges enclosed between them.
