Description

Pink damask robe with embroidery. The robe has a short standing collar, wide sleeves, side slits and side opening with frog closure and metal buttons. The damask is woven with ‘Buddha’s hand’ citron, peach and floral spray motifs. The wide borders around the collar, side opening and hem have a white prunus motif around the sides on blue ground edged by wide, pale green trim with a butterfly motif. The ends of the sleeves have embroidered peony, bird and bat motifs on pale green ground. The inside lining is blue silk.

Cultural Context

Informal dress, nu ta kua, of a Han woman during the Ch'ing Dynasty. It looks like nu wai kua (lady's outer gown) but shorter.
