Description

A small piece carved into a cicada with ivory-coloured jade. Front side has two long vertical grooves along the centre, with two horizontal rows in relief at the other end which has three curves. Back side has elongated triangular-shaped section with five horizontal lines near the tip and three diagonal lines at the opposite end on either sides of the smaller triangular-shaped area.

Cultural Context

Cicada (an insect) in the form of a plaque frequently placed in the mouth of the dead to protect the body from harm; a custom of the Shang and Chou Dynasties.
