Description

A small light brown wood carving of a whale with oval eyes, jagged triangular teeth in its open mouth, fins on each side, a dorsal fin on top of its back, and a tail which curves upward around onto its back.

History Of Use

A 'smoother', used to flatten and polish the weave while making grass basketry. Normally part of a basket maker's tool kit.

Narrative

Collection of basket making materials (1413/1-26), sold to M. Davis by Dora Frank's son; then Davis sold the collection to MOA.
