Tool Item Number: 2815/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Implement with a long wooden handle holding a long, narrow, metal blade. The handle is slightly flared at the bottom and clubbed at the top. Through a hole in the clubbed portion, the metal blade has been inserted at a downward angle. It tapers to a sharp flair at the working end, and a cylinder of metal has been attached at the other to prevent the piece from slipping through the hole in the wood. A ring has been inserted into the flared end of the handle.

History Of Use

Transpierced hoes, or inter-material hoes, originated from Zambia and can be found from the Senegambia region to Southern Ethiopia. It is the simplest form of blade fixing, that is amended for the land it is suited for. The spread of the practice allows for easier utilization of basic farming and cultural practices.
