Teapot Item Number: Ee4.49 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Copper teapot known as khog ting (ཁོག་ལྟིང།) with a raised foot, curved spout, handle, tall neck, and domed lid (part b) with a bud-shaped finial. Decorative brass bands--some with repousse floral designs--ring the spout, handle, neck and lid. Short length of metal chain is attached to a loop atop the handle.

History Of Use

This teapot is a multipurpose vessel. It may be used for tea or for chang (Tibetan Barley Wine). In Tibet, a vessel like this can also be used to transport water to pour into the bowls.

Narrative

Collector had butter tea in this teapot with the seller. Purchased from a house near the lammisary of Geliku.
