History Of Use

Sámi woman's hat. Men's hats differ from women's hats both in form and pattern, whereas there is less difference between the sexes in other items of Saami costume, such as the tunic or shoes. Men's hats are, generally speaking, larger and more elaborately decorated than women's. There is considerable variation in the trimming of all clothing to distinguish one regional group from another.
