Description

Wood figure of a man on platform of a staff. Wearing the grass skirt, and tall conical cap of a feticheur and holding a rattle his left hand. Figure has tribal marks on cheeks. There is a stuffed fabric band around the bottom. A string of cowrie shells is attached to the wood loop at the bottom.

Cultural Context

Carried by the priest of the Shango Cult; Shango was one of the first kings of Oyo and has since become identified with thunder and lightning.
