Description
A tall wood figure of a female. She is standing with her short legs bent slightly at the knees. From her square shoulders, her arms extend downward, bending at the elbows to curve forward so that the hands are resting on the upper front of each leg. She has a long neck, and breasts. Her eyes have a horizontal grooved slit and her eyebrows are upraised. From her compressed mouth, there are three incised radiating lines at either side. Incised line patterns indicate the coiffure.
Cultural Context
Object of worship of the descendants of the ancestor, who wear her particular scarifications to identify the clan or lineage. The three marks by her lips mean "mansa" or "thrice-born!" meaning she was the third born daughter and the only one to live. Body scarifications are merely decorative.
