Description

Mask of Podobujang (a cop) character. Round white and black face with eyes that are outlined with black dots. White bulbous nose and black painted moustache. Black cloth covering and ties are attached to the back of the mask and hang down. Mask backing is yellow and has a white label with printed red characters to one side.

Narrative

This set of masks were made in Canada after Mr. Han immigrated, but his family brought him the traditional materials to make the masks from Korea.

Specific Techniques

First the gourd masks were carved, then three layers of paper mache were applied, then they were painted.

Iconographic Meaning

Podobujang is a policeman who is supposed to focus on providing security for the public, however, he neglects his duties and instead barges in on an argument between the dirty old nobleman, his wife and the pretty young girl. The policeman chases the old man away and grabs the young girl in order to have his way with her.
