Description

Flat holster for a small pistol, constructed from silk textile, which is profusely embroidered on both sides in chain stitch with orange silk or rayon floss, using a meandering pattern. A large, multi-coloured, stylized sun or star motif appears on each side. The holster is trimmed on three edges with many small blue glass beads. Metallic gold braid is used to outline some of the motifs. The embroidery is backed with red cotton textile.

History Of Use

Embroidered holsters and gun cases are made by the women and are used by herders to protect their weapons. Weapons are needed to defend the herds against predators and poachers.

Iconographic Meaning

The star or sun disc is thought to have protective powers; similarly, meandering lines and blue glass beads are used to ensnare evil forces and provide protection to the user.
