Description

Twisted grass with raised woven threads in eight horizontal rows and conical-shaped brass buttons forming the design on the front. There are five main sections of conical-shaped brass buttons, two of which have twenty-five in a five by five format and three of which have twenty in a five by four format. Each end has a vertical row of five conical-shaped brass buttons with three around the rounded edge. Small pink, blue, and white glass beads are attacheded at intervals along the top and bottom edges.

History Of Use

Izifociya or ixhama type of Zulu belt. Unlike the isibhamba, which was traditionally worn only by married women, an ixhama could also be worn by unmarried young women and by young men. (See "Zulu Treasures" p. 142, fig. G36)

Narrative

Possibly donated to the BCPM by a Mr. Murdoch--note attached to belt said "...belt from Boer War, in Victoria since 1910, Mr. Murdoch."
