Description
Cylindrical flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with single looped border and foot. Watch-spring base construction. Imbricated design of flower, in red cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?), and leaf or fern frond (?), in red cherry bark. Foot has two rows of cat-tail(?) grass beading.
Narrative
Footed base could indicate that it was made by a basket maker from Spuzzum, B.C.?
Iconographic Meaning
The brown flower pattern is thought to be a chocolate lily; the bulb of this flower is edible and the flower, when dried is used in Indian pudding.
The white flower pattern is thought to be a 'spring beauty,' of which the tubers are known as 'Indian potatoes.'
