Stencil Item Number: 2694/4 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Part of a set of 5 stencils that overall represents a diving whale. This stencil depicts large whale head (part a) and a smaller element that is not past of the final design (part b). The stencil has a combination of cutout, and drawn areas. The only part that has been used as a stencil is the right part of the whale's eye, corresponding with the blanked out area in another stencil (2694/2 a-b). Both sides have been used.

Narrative

2694/1-5 were stencils used by Reid to paint Haida designs on a linen bedspread he and his wife Martine made for their bed when they were married. The bedspread was shown in a photograph in an article titled "At Home With Bill Reid" in Western Living magazine in 1986.
