Jacket Item Number: 1676/2 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Black hanten (袢纏, also written as 半天, 袢天, 半纏) with blue pattern. The pattern consists of tiny blue lines and dots in horizontal rows. There is a wide patterned band around the neck and down the centre opening. The sleeves are slightly tapered with an opening under the arm. On the inside lower back, there is a large blue square sewn down on three sides. The rest of the inside is unlined.
There are different styles of hanten (袢纏) for different uses. It is worn as a winter jacket/coat if padded, a workman’s jacket, by traditional shopkeepers or during a festival. This hanten is likely to be a workman's jacket worn over ordinary clothes, not over kimono.
