Description

Carved, wooden, khenkho mask with a long beak and a raised triangular protrusion for a nose. The beak is hinged with metal wire on either side. The beak is painted black with a red mouth. The nose has a red painted s-shape with white around it. Attached to the head is a set of horns with a curled end. The eyes are clear glass white, outlined in red on a white, ovoid shaped background; brow is black. The inside of the mask is hollow. Beak opens slightly. The mask is painted black, red, and white with Northwest Coast stylized designs.

Iconographic Meaning

Represents Khenko (B. Holm, 1961). Boas identifies a similar mask as a crane: adamgwali.
