Description

Model figure wearing a brightly painted suit - white, black, red, yellow horizontal stripes on the body. The fitgure is also wearing a black pleated "skirt" and has a brown chest with a white diagonal stripe from his right shoulder to his left waist. The figure has a narrow, angular-shaped head with eyes, which has been painted white and red. The figure's head is painted black at the top, and is wearing a large white fan-shaped headdress. The figure is holding a staff in his right hand and is standing on a black base with "Catelenga" written on the underside.

History Of Use

Wooden miniatures (K4.324-29) showing masks of the male initiation ceremonies – called the mukanda. K4.324 is Cacuni-Catuta, K4.325 Chibrambialo, K4.326 Chicunza, K4.327 Sacalumbo, K4.328 Catelenga, and K4.329 Liango. Each mask represents an ancestor, as well as specific values, skills, and knowledge.
