Description

Dark grey hanten (袢纏, also written as 半天, 袢天, 半纏) with patterned patches. The hanten has a white square pattern stitched overall. The neck and centre opening are edged with a wide black band. The upper front and back have large patches with different patterns in white on dark blue ground. The sleeves are short and blue with a white abstract pattern. The upper lining is natural coloured fabric.

History Of Use

This hanten (袢纏) is likely to be a workman's jacket worn over ordinary clothes, not over kimono. There are different styles of hanten (袢纏) for different uses. It is worn as a winter jacket/coat if padded, a workman’s jacket, by traditional shopkeepers or during a festival.
