Mat Item Number: A9374 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Small rectangular weaving made mountain goat’s wool. The design consists of a brown eagle with yellow beak and legs. There is a stripe of brown above and below the bird; warp fringe on either end. Loom woven.

Narrative

No provenance information was recorded for this weaving, however it clearly appears in the centre of a photograph from the 1934 Coqualeetza Residential School Yearbook. This was during the time that George Raley was the Principal of the school, so it is assumed that the piece was part of the Raley collection acquired by the Museum in 1948.
